It is really cool to be an American who knows enough Japanese to get around town. It is really cool to be an American who looks like the rest of the crowd here. It is really cool to be half Japanese. It is really cool to have relatives who live here!
Magra's (for those unfamiliar with the matriarch in our family - she's my mom's mom) sister and husband live in Chiba, the city in the Tokyo area that is home to Narita Airport. They care for their granddaughter (named after me, actually - Julie-chan) and they absolutely love driving up here to northern Japan to visit us. My great-uncle loves to drive on the country roads, my great-aunt loves the fresh produce we have up here, and little Julie-chan has a hay day playing with Hayden and Katie. Last year, they came to visit twice while Magra was visiting. This year, they came once - but are planning to come back in two weeks for Hayden and Katie's birthday party. My mom and dad will still be here. Here are some pictures of their last visit when we went to the Shimoda Momoishi Festival.
